I know this is old news but I only recently played and beat it. You might wonder why I played this game even though most people say it's crap. Well, it was in my house, I never played it and I should have a proper opinion and not be a troll. So how bad is it?
Warning of spoilers
Story
I have no idea what to make of the story. I get what was going o but it doesn't make sense to me. There are these guys that get cursed by this robot god thing and must do a mission for them or become a robot zombie, but it doesn't tell you so you have to figure it out on your own. And there lies the big problem. Why doesn't it tell you? we later learn the the god bots can talk so why don't they tell them what they want. And no, I refuse to read the datalogs.
Characters
As for the characters, while most of the NPC's felt very irrelevant and the villain made little sense, the main party kinda grew on me favorite to least, we have:
Vanille, the real main character while she may be annoying at times I found her very adorable. Like a Pinkie Pie with a guilt complex. And thats the thing I like most about her. While she looks all happy and may have mental condition, she knows whats going on, what they have to do and the consequence, ad she tries to get away from it but only through the friendship of Fang, Sazh, Snow and Hope, does she get the courage to fight against her mission ad stop the destruction of the world. Almost any scene with her makes me smile.
Sazh, one of the few characters you most likely care about. He's a father who's son gets cursed and wants to know what his mission is and well go to hell and back to finish his mission. While he's not the funniest person in the game, he was one of the only ones who nevered annoyed me .favorite scene with him is when he has a breakdown because of everything that happened to him and attempts to shoot himself.
Hope, I thought was pretty interesting. He's a young boy who's put in a situation he never wanted to be in. He see his mother die, becomes cursed, has to be partnered up with Ligthning. In short, I understand him. I know some people hate him but I'm not one of them. The best scene with Hope is the one where they fight Alexander as it perfectly describes his character.
Fang, I honestly have trouble describing Fang. She strikes me as someone who's serious but a bit carefree. The most interesting thing about her s her relationship with Vanille which is also hard to explain. Not the best character but I don't hate her. best scene with her is after the fight with Hector and is comforting Vanille.
Snow, At first i hated Snow. He was an idiot who didn't seem to know what he was doing and seem to make things for himself. but after a while and thinking about it, i was a jerk to him. Yes he's a idiot but he's also one of the few people who seems to care about almost everyone and just want to save his fiance. And even if people hate him he's still willing to help. The scene where Hope tries to kill him and carries him home after being injured was where I startd to like him
Lightning, I had a negative opinion of her before I played this. And after playing, I hate her even more. Not since Duke Nukem have I hated a playable character. Lightning is hateable in every way. She tries to be cool and serious but comes off as a poser, she's incredible violet and mean to the point I don't want her near her own sister or Hope and she's to kill hundreds of people just to kill a god robot. If anyone has seen Spoony's FF10 review, you can add Lightning to the list of games the story doesn't revolve around.
Gameplay
For starters, let's talk about the hallway. putting us in a dungeon with changing environments is boring. The end. Also, lack of towns really kills the sense of exploration. There are only two areas in this game i liked. There was the part before a boss where you had to change the weather to get past some strong monsters and a tower where you fight hunts to get higher up. They felt like dungeons. And yes other FF's had linear dungeons, but they sometimes had secrets in them and can be returned if you want to.
Now for the combat. And I must ask, what were they thinking. You only control the leader and the AI controls you team. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't game over if the leader dies. Why. Why can't I control someone else or change my party like I can do in 12. And speaking of 12, do you remember the Gambits that when used in the right way, can make the game play itself, well in 13, just pick a job and the game does the rest. but you do need to pay attention so you can heal. The problem is most oblivious in one boss where the gimmick is that he changes his weakness, a common boss type. However once you scan it, you will always use the magic he's weak to,even when it changes. Another problem had was that the enemies have way too much health and I don't mean the big guys, I mean the small slugs or flans. Almost any enemy takes forever to kill when you first meet them, even with it's weakness.
And don't get me started on the crystal level thing. My problem isn't that it's also a hallway, it's that I have to kill a boss in order to level more. That is bullcrap. I would like to level more so I can survive a hard boss. like say a summon boss.
There's also an upgrade system, but I never used it.
Music and Art
Music 's there. Nuff said. As the art, Characters look ice, environments are lovely and the monsters....Have you seen Spoony's review and how he complained about the robes. I fell like complaining about some of these monsters. Yes there are some good designs like the Ochus and the giant turtles. but others just look stupid, Why does the dragon have a head for a butt? Why do behemoths have swords in there heads? Why dose everything have a robot version of it. Why is every boss a recolor and a robot. And there are so many solider enemies than I thought could be in a game.
Conclusion
While this isn't the worst game I've ever played, this is the worst FF game. If it's lying around your house somewhere, give it a try. Just don't spend money on it or it's sequels.
5/10
